Report: San Diegans spending more than $80,000 per year

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows that San Diegans are spending most of their income on housing.

In total, the average San Diego household spent nearly $80,000 per year on expenses, according to the report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

From 2017 to 2018, more than $28,000 went to housing for the average San Diegan, accounting for nearly 36 percent of families’ household budgets.

Likewise, San Diegans paid an average of more than $11,300 on transportation and over $10,600 on food between 2017 and 2018.

Between September of 2018 and September of 2019, consumer prices in San Diego rose by 1.7 percent.

Although the report mainly focuses on major expenses, the bureau did break down some specific examples of spending.

According to the bureau, more than $1,200 went to alcoholic beverages between 2017 and 2018.

San Diegans, on average, also spent more than $5,500 on cereals and bakery items, over $5,000 on food away from home and $1,033 on fruits and vegetables.
