3 people injured after police vehicle crashes into Barrio Logan store

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least three people were injured after a community college police SUV crashed into a Barrio Logan store Wednesday morning.

San Diego police told 10News the crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at the Ponderosa Deli Market at 1897 National Ave.

According to San Diego police, a Lyft car Avenue is believed to have run a red light as it traveled westbound on National Avenue. Police said a San Diego Community College District police SUV heading south on Cesar Chavez Parkway tried to avoid colliding with the Lyft and veered into the market. SDPD said in a statement the Lyft was a 2017 Nissan Altima, with a 27-year-old Hispanic man behind the wheel.

A pedestrian in front of the store broke his leg in two places and was transported to the hospital.

The police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, including cuts on her face and pain in her head. Police say she was released Wednesday afternoon. 10News learned a female passenger in the Lyft car was also hospitalized after complaining of pain.

Structural engineers and San Diego Gas & Electric crews were summoned to the scene to monitor the building.

The crash remains under investigation. No one was arrested.
