SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man jumped out of a car as it was being pursued in the El Cajon area but was taken into custody after breaking into an apartment.
The bizarre chase began at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday when San Diego County sheriff’s deputies tried to pull over a Mitsubishi Eclipse for unknown reasons on westbound Interstate 8 near state Route 67.
The Eclipse made a quick stop near Parkway Plaza that was long enough for a male passenger to get out of the car and run into a drainage canal.
As patrol cars pursued the Eclipse, deputies on the ground chased after the passenger through the drains and into neighborhoods.
According to sheriff’s officials, the passenger broke into an apartment unit in the 300 block of Compton Street and attempted to hide inside when he was confronted by the resident and thrown out of the home.
The passenger made his way onto the roof of the apartment building but was spotted by deputies. He was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
Before breaking into the apartment, a resident told 10News the passenger knocked on his door and tried to get inside his home.
"There was some guy standing at the door, looked like he was trying to get in, and then he started saying he was running from the cops and to let him in ... and I told him no and to please leave," the resident said.
Sheriff’s officials said patrol cars followed the Eclipse on westbound I-8 into the College Area, but the pursuit was called due to dangerous conditions.
A detailed description of the Eclipse was not immediately available.
