LAKESIDE (CNS) - A 27-year-old man was killed after California Highway Patrol says he reportedly crashed a stolen vehicle into a tree in Lakeside early Sunday morning.
California Highway Patrol dispatchers received a call just after 4 a.m. about a reported collision near the intersection of Moreno Avenue and San Vicente Avenue.
CHP officers arriving at the scene found at least one person dead in a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe reported stolen in September. The car had overturned onto its side, pinning the man underneath, CHP Officer Travis Garrow said.
Firefighters were able to get the man out from underneath the car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, Garrow said.
Officers believed the Tahoe was heading north on Moreno Avenue before losing control, veering into the oncoming lane and hitting a tree near the edge of the road.
Officers said the man was not wearing a seatbelt.
Garrow said because the victim was partially ejected, investigators can't yet say for certain whether he was the only person in the car.
San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Karla Menzies said the CHP requested sheriff's dog units for help tracking, but had no further information.
The CHP does not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, Garrow said.
