FALLBROOK, Calif. (CNS) - A 19-year-old man died when the sedan he was driving went off northbound Interstate 15 and crashed into a tree near Fallbrook, authorities said.
The crash happened on northbound I-15 just north of state Route 76 shortly after 12:40 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 19-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his male passenger, whose age was not immediately available, was taken by Mercy Air helicopter to Palomar Hospital with moderate injuries, said North County Fire Protection District Public Information Officer John Choi.
CHP officers shut the freeway down to allow the helicopter to land and carry the injured passenger to the hospital.
The lanes were reopened at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
