SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a crash that sent a child to the hospital Monday.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. at Woodland Parkway and Rock Springs Road.

"Witnesses observed two 12 year old male Woodland Parkway Middle School students run westbound into a marked crosswalk against a solid red signal light and red crosswalk signal," deputies said.

The 38-year-old male driver of a white Nissan could not avoid hitting the first boy, while the second narrowly avoided being struck, according to deputies.

"We have spoken with the parents, and the student is currently in fair condition, receiving medical care, and with his family," said Assistant Principal Jennifer Gutierrez in a statement sent to families. "Parents, please take this time to talk with your child about obeying traffic signals and wearing helmets when riding bikes or skateboards. Drivers are reminded to follow the 25 MPH speed limit when in proximity to the schools."

The driver stopped at the scene. Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.
