EL CAJON, Calif. (CNS) — The bodies of a man and dog were found in El Cajon Saturday morning by firefighters responding to a house fire, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue officials.
Firefighters responded to 1433 Melody Lane shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, where arriving crews found the front of the house fully involved with flames. Due to a report of a potential victim still in the home, they entered the structure under "emergency rescue mode," Heartland Fire PIO Andy McKellar said.
"Crews searched the home and unfortunately discovered the body of a deceased male. A deceased dog was also found in the dwelling," McKellar said. "No other remains, or injured people, were found."
The fire was knocked down about 15 minutes after the first crews arrived, at around 2:15 a.m., and appeared to have started in or near a bedroom, McKellar said. The cause was under investigation.
A total of 17 fire personnel were on scene with no reports of injuries to responders.
In addition to Heartland Fire & Rescue, cooperating agencies for the response included the El Cajon Police Department, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the Santee Fire Department, Lakeside Fire Protection District and San Miguel Fire Rescue.
