SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One lane on the Kearny Villa Road exit from northbound Interstate 805, which had been closed since Monday after a massive sinkhole formed on the roadway, was reopened early Wednesday morning.

California Highway Patrol officials said one lane on the off-ramp from I-805 was opened for traffic, but repair work on the 25-foot wide, 25-foot deep sinkhole is ongoing.

The large crater was reported during the Monday morning commute, on the right lane of the exit ramp.

Officials said they believe a broken pipe collapsed a culvert, causing the road to cave in on the off-ramp.

Crews told 10News the sinkhole was patched with a mix of concrete sand and water, but it will need to set. Work to repair the culvert is not finished, crews said.

For those trying to get to Rady Children’s Hospital or Sharp Memorial Hospital, Caltrans made the following detour available: Northbound I-805 to northbound SR-163, exit onto Balboa Ave. and turn right on Kearny Villa Rd.
