The California Highway Patrol says the person who died in Sunday afternoon's head-on crash on San Felipe Road in the Julian area was an 8-year-old girl. CHP says six more people were taken to the hospital with major injuries as a result of this crash. Officers say that, although the investigation is ongoing, alcohol is suspected to be a factor.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. Sunday, when a 25-year-old Oceanside man was driving a 2005 Toyota Tacoma north on San Felipe Road, just south of Montezuma Valley Road, with a 24-year-old San Marcos man riding as a passenger. At the same time, a 26-year-old Arizona man was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry south on San Felipe Road. His passengers included a 28-year-old woman, an 8-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old boy.
A 40-year-old Escondido man was driving a 1997 Ford F-350 that was hauling a utility trailer in front of the Tacoma's path. A 40-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl, and a 6-year-old girl were all riding in the Ford.
CHP says "for reasons still under investigation," the Tacoma driver crossed over the solid, double-yellow lines, entering the southbound lane and crashing head-on into the Camry, the press release states. The Tacoma driver couldn't regain control and crashed into the right side of the Ford. CHP says the Tacoma ended up overturning onto the road before it caught on fire.
CHP says the driver and front passenger of the Tacoma were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with major injuries. Everyone inside the Camry was also taken to Sharp with major injuries; CHP says the 8-year-old girl in that car later died at the hospital.
In the Ford, the 13-year-old girl was the lone person hurt in that vehicle, as she suffered minor injuries.
Five fire engines responded to the scene.
Emergency crews had to shut down both lanes at Scissors Crossing.
