SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Flags at all buildings and facilities operated by the City of San Diego will fly at half-staff to honor victims of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Monday.

In a statement, the mayor said: “The City of San Diego is flying flags at half-staff in tribute to every American, Californian and San Diegan who has fallen to COVID-19 and in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in hard-hit places like New York. The sudden passing of so many fellow Americans from a pandemic disease is unparalleled in modern history. It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the continued loss of life and I ask that you join me by keeping the departed in your thoughts and prayers.”

As of Sunday, there are 1,804 confirmed coronavirus cases in San Diego County. Data shows 45 county residents have died due to the virus.

In the state of California, there are 21,794 confirmed cases of the virus and 651 deaths.

Over 20,000 people across the U.S. have succumbed to the virus. New York state has the most fatalities, with over 9,000.

The mayor “continues to urge vigilance, echoing warnings from public health officials that a premature easing of orders that mandate physical distancing might contribute to a second wave of infections.”

While California’s stay-at-home order remains in effect until April 30, Los Angeles County recently extended its own order through May 15.
