SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters knocked down a fire that erupted in a homeless encampment in a City Heights canyon.

The fire was reported at around 12:45 a.m. in an area off the 3600 block of 35th Street, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials.

Several residents whose homes are near the canyon were forced to temporarily evacuate as firefighters battled the blaze.

Crews descended down steep terrain to fight the fire. They doused the flames in about 15 minutes.

Three transients spotted running from the scene were detained by San Diego police. There is no word on if they were involved in the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
