Two other surviving family members, Wendy and Angel, were out of the hospital and in attendance.

After the church service, a funeral procession drove by the house the family once called home. Loved ones shared a moment in front of a memorial placed outside of the charred, boarded-up house on Clay Avenue.

Friends of Mayo-Cortes described her as a hardworking mother who went through many hardships but was always resilient. One neighbor and close friend described the family as not having much, but always willing to give to others.
