SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver survived after his car slid off the side of Interstate 15 and crashed into a tree.

The wreck happened at around 3:30 a.m. off southbound I-15 near Interstate 805 in the City Heights area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials said the driver lost control of his Acura for unknown reasons, veered off the freeway and down an embankment. The car was completely destroyed after slamming into a tree, but the driver somehow survived the impact and climbed out of the wreckage through the rear window.

The driver climbed up the embankment and reportedly called a tow truck to help him. The tow truck company then called 911.
