SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 55-year-old man was stabbed in the neck Monday morning but was expected to survive following an apparently random attack at a Midway-area sex shop, police said.

It happened around 1 a.m. at the Barnett Avenue Adult Superstore just south of Pacific Highway, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.

The 55-year-old man was in the store attempting to make a purchase when a man walked up behind him and stabbed him in the neck with a knife, Heims said.

The suspect then fled in an unknown direction and the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of at least one stab wound to the neck, which was not believed to be life-threatening, Heims said.

Investigators were attempting to determine if the suspect and the victim knew each other, Sgt. Joe Ruvido said.

"At this point it appears to be a totally random attack," the sergeant said.

The suspect was described as a white man in his late 20s. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black shorts, black socks, white shoes and a baseball hat on backwards.

Detectives from the San Diego Police Department's western division were investigating the attack.
