LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car crashed into a power pole off interstate 8 in La Mesa and burst into flames, killing at least one person, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.
The incident was reported just after 5 a.m. on eastbound I-8 near Jackson Drive, according to the CHP.
Details on what led to the single-vehicle crash were not immediately released, but the CHP said officers responded to the incident and found the vehicle fully engulfed off the slow lane.
Dispatchers said at least one person was declared dead as a result of the crash and subsequent fire. It is unknown if the deceased person was the driver or a passenger.
The crash and emergency response forced the closure of multiple eastbound I-8 lanes during the early start of the morning commute.
