SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A couple escaped from a fire that tore through their San Marcos home early Friday morning.

The fire erupted at around 1:45 a.m. at a home in the 1500 block of Hilcorte Drive, according to fire officials.

A husband and his wife woke up to the sound of their smoke detectors going off and then saw that their garage was engulfed in flames.

As the blaze spread to the house, the couple and their dog got out of the home safely.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to douse the flames, but the fire burned garage and caused part of its roof to collapse. A car parked in the driveway was also destroyed.

The Red Cross was providing assistance to the home occupants, 10News learned.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
