(KGTV) - A wild chase in the North County ended with the arrest of a couple suspected in a carjacking incident.
A man said he was in front of his home in Del Mar late Sunday night when a man and woman confronted him, hit him over the head three times and then drove off in his blue Volkswagen Beetle.
At about 2:30 a.m. Monday, authorities spotted the VW off Del Mar Heights Road in Del Mar. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, it sped away.
The VW led law enforcement officers on a high-speed pursuit on northbound Interstate 5 into Oceanside, but then proceeded to come back south towards Del Mar.
After entering Del Mar, the VW turned around and again sped north on I-5 towards Oceanside, running over spike strips along the way.
The car eventually made its way to the Oceanside Pier before running out of gas in the parking lot of the amphitheater.
Officers, with guns drawn and a K-9 ready, surrounded the VW as a masked man and his sunglasses-wearing girlfriend exited the vehicle.
The couple surrendered and both were taken into custody.
As he was being taken away in handcuffs, the man told 10News that being in a high-speed chase was the “best thing ever.”
No one was hurt during the pursuit.
