SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (CNS) - Monte Vista High School held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday at the site of its future event center.

The 18,850-square-foot facility is the first performance venue to be built at the school. Theater is now performed in a converted classroom, according to the Grossmont Union High School District.

The facility will include a 350-seat event center, a "black box" theater, a digital music classroom and such theater attachments as a scene shop, dressing room and green room. The district says it will also include "green" features: energy-efficient plumbing, drought-tolerant landscaping, maximized use of natural lighting.

The event center is scheduled to be completed in summer 2020.

The $17.4 million facility is being funded through 2008's Proposition U and 2016's Measure BB.
