EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A driver faces hit-and-run and DUI charges following a collision at an El Cajon intersection that led to a sheared fire hydrant.

The crash occurred at around 11:15 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of E. Main and Ballantyne streets, according to El Cajon police.

Police said a Kia was traveling southbound on Ballantyne Street when it ran a red light and T-boned a car at the intersection.

According to witnesses, the impact caused the other vehicle to spin out of control and strike a nearby fire hydrant

As the broken hydrant sent water high into the air and onto the street, witnesses told police they saw the Kia’s driver get out of his car and run away. The driver of the other car was not injured.

Witness Michelle Gutierrez told 10News, “If your name is on the tag, I’m not understanding why they run.”

Responding officers tracked down the Kia’s driver at a nearby park and took him into custody.

It took city crews about 15 minutes to turn off the water from the hydrant.
