CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car veered off Interstate 5 in the Chula Vista area and struck a man before bursting into flames early Friday morning.

At around 2 a.m., authorities said a woman who was driving under the influence was heading south on I-5 when the vehicle swerved off the right shoulder across the J Street on-ramp and tumbled down an embankment off Bay Boulevard before striking a homeless man in an encampment.

When the car stopped, it burst into flames, but the driver was able to get out and crawl away from the wreckage.

A woman who witnessed the crash said that it was her boyfriend who was struck by the car. She told 10News, “We were about to get in the tent and all of a sudden we heard this loud noise. My boyfriend was standing right there at the moment where it happened. The car went over his head; all I heard was him yelling for me.”

The driver and the injured man were both transported to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity. No other injuries were reported.

Police said the female driver will be arrested on suspicion of DUI after her release from the hospital.
