Car exiting freeway goes airborne, slams into mall sign in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A car exiting Interstate 8 near a Mission Valley shopping mall went airborne and slammed into a sign, causing a passenger to be ejected and leaving the driver trapped in the wreckage.

The crash was reported at around 2:45 a.m. at the corner of Camino Del Rio North and Mission Center Road, near the Westfield Mission Valley mall, according to authorities.

Several witnesses told 10News they saw a Mercedes Benz coupe exit from westbound I-8 onto Mission Center Road at a high rate of speed. The Mercedes then went airborne and crashed into a sign at the corner, according to the witnesses.

10News learned a passenger was thrown from the vehicle at impact and the driver remained trapped in the driver’s seat. A part of the sign pierced the driver’s side windshield, but narrowly missed the driver.

Emergency crews took several minutes to extract the driver from the wreckage; the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

The circumstances that led to the crash are under investigation.
