SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new mural paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was completed Sunday in Oak Park.

Local artist David Mena started painting the portrait of the late civil rights icon on the wall of a business at 54th Street and Redwood on Wednesday.

The current owner of the building says the wall was prone to graffiti tributes for Lamar Canady, an Oak Park barber who was shot in killed in 2014.

Last week, the owner asked Mena to paint a mural to honor Canady and also put a meaningful quote on the wall. Mena decided to also pay tribute to MLK Jr. amid the civil unrest and ahead of the MLK holiday on Monday.

"This is a message for Oak Park and every community in San Diego that we're here, we're as one. More than ever we should be united, setting that example for the youth and just for everyone."

The Martin Luther King Jr. quote painted on the mural reads, “Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.”
