SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- AAA is once again helping out San Diego motorists who may not be able to drive home on New Year’s Eve.

The Automobile Club of Southern California’s free Tipsy Tow service will be available for drivers who needs assistance on Dec. 31. The service is being offered for a 24th consecutive year, and it’s open for both AAA members and non-members.

From 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, through 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, Tipsy Tow will be there as a last resort for those who should not be behind the wheel.

The Tipsy Tow contact number is 800-400-4222, and drivers can get a free tow home or to a hotel where they are a registered guest. Tows beyond seven miles may incur an extra charge.

Callers should tell the operator "I need a Tipsy Tow," and an Auto Club-contracted roadside service truck will be dispatched. Free rides, however, are only available to drivers, not passengers, and is limited to a one-way, one-time ride to the driver's residence.

Anita Lorz Villagrana, Auto Club’s Traffic Safety and Community Programs Manager, said, “New Year’s Eve is widely regarded as the most dangerous holiday night of the year. We remind drivers about the high crash risk from driving impaired and that DUI laws apply to impairment by any drug, not just alcohol. Mixing of alcohol and drugs is a deadly combination and not worth risking your own life or others. Impaired driving crashes are tragic and preventable. This holiday season celebrate with a plan and plan ahead if you will be celebrating.”
