EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people were injured when the car they were in was struck by gunfire on Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday night.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting at around 9:30 p.m. on eastbound I-8 near El Cajon Boulevard.

10News learned two people in the car -- a man and a woman -- were both shot in their legs, but they were able to make their way to a gas station on West Washington Avenue to await help. Multiple bullet holes were found on their black sedan.

The gunshot victims were taken to the hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, CHP officials said.

The investigation into the shooting forced officials to close a section of I-8 for several hours, but all affected lanes were reopened by 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

CHP investigators are trying to determine if the two people were targeted or if the shooting was a random act.

A description of the suspected shooter was not immediately available.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
