SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two men were detained early Wednesday morning in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins in the Lake Murray area, San Diego police said.

According to police, officers were called to Robles Way and Robles Drive in response to reported vehicle break-ins at around 1:45 a.m.

With assistance from a police helicopter, officers on the ground spotted two men suspected in the crimes as they tried to hide in a yard.

Officers eventually corralled the men and detained them. Witnesses identified the men as the pair allegedly responsible for the break-ins, according to police.

One of the men detained was later released. The man contacted 10News to say he is a nearby resident and that he was visiting his girlfriend when he heard a helicopter circling the area. He said four patrol cars then "swerved in with big lights."

The man was approached by officers who then told him he was being detained. Witnesses were unable to identify the man as one of the suspects and officers released him, he said.

He also said the other person who was detained remains in custody.

Police said at least nine vehicles on streets around Robles Way and Robles Drive were broken into, with trunks and doors of the vehicles left wide open.
