LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) – A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after his car collided with an Uber vehicle on Interstate 8, sending the rideshare driver and his passenger to the hospital.
The California Highway Patrol said the two-vehicle crash happened at around 12:10 a.m. Thursday on eastbound I-8, near Baltimore Drive, in the La Mesa area.
The CHP said Stephen Briseno was driving his 2009 Cadillac CTS in the No. 2 lane “at a reported high rate of speed” when the Cadillac rear-ended a 2017 Honda Civic on the same lane and caused it to overturn.
According to CHP officials, the 36-year-old Uber driver was wearing his seat belt but suffered major injuries. The 22-year-old female passenger was not wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries, the CHP said. Both were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The 24-year-old Briseno, from El Cajon, was not injured in the wreck, but CHP officials said he did “exhibit signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication” and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injuries.
Briseno, who was the lone occupant in the Cadillac, was booked into San Diego County Jail.
