(KGTV) - As the traditional holiday shopping frenzy nears stores across the U.S., retailers are preparing to up their workforce.
JC Penny announced plans to hire more than 40,000 seasonal employees nationwide, 5,500 of those in California alone. The company will host its first-ever National Hiring Day events at all locations on Oct. 17 from 2 - 8 p.m. local time to conduct on-the-spot interviews.

Locations will interview for various associate, customer service, and support positions, including cashiers, beauty consultants, and more.
Employment offers may be made on the spot as well.
Any interested job seekers are encouraged to apply online ahead of time here or in-store.
Another hiring day event will be held on Oct. 24 from 1 - 3 p.m. local time for JC Penny Salon by InStyle positions. Those events will be held at all JC Penny salon locations.

This week, Amazon also announced plans to hire thousands in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. The online giant plans to hire more than 120,000 workers, with plans to transition many jobs to full-time positions.
Target also plans to hire about 23,000 more holiday employees this season compared to last year.
In contrast, Macy's said it plans to hire fewer employees for the holiday season while Walmart said they will opt to give more hours to regular employees instead of increasing their seasonal workforce.
