ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -  San Diego County Sheriff's investigators are searching for clues after someone discovered a human skull near Lake Hodges on Friday morning.

A passer-by reported finding what appeared to be a human skull shortly before 8:30 a.m. in an open area off Lake Drive and Maple Lane, near Escondido, according to San Diego police.

Responding officers called in homicide detectives to search for any signs of suspicious circumstances connected to the death.

Sheriff's deputies believe the skull could be linked to Marisol Lopez, the missing 30-year-old woman whose body was found last November at Lake Hodges.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department took over the investigation after authorities determined that the spot where the skull turned up is in an unincorporated area.
