Hatchet-wielding man in The Container Store robbery attempt still at large

SAN DIEGO - Authorities released additional surveillance photos Friday in an effort to identify and locate a man who attempted to hack open a cash register with a hatchet during a robbery attempt at a business near the Fashion Valley mall.

The suspect walked up to the checkout at The Container Store at 7097 Friars Road, struck the counter with the small ax and demanded cash from an employee shortly before 8 p.m. on Sept. 30, according to San Diego police and Crime Stoppers.

As the employee backed away from the register, the suspect unsuccessfully tried to open it himself by swinging the hatchet into the keyboard. He ultimately fled empty-handed but used the weapon to shatter a sliding glass door on his way out.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 30s, roughly 6 feet 1, with a medium build, reddish-brown hair and a goatee. He was wearing a blue T-shirt, dark shorts, black gloves, black shoes and black sunglasses.

He was last seen getting into the passenger seat of an older-model, faded and heavily oxidized teal Honda Accord or Civic sedan.

Anyone with information on the suspect's identity or whereabouts was asked to call police at (619) 531-2299. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or by contacting the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org.
