EL CAJON, Calif. - The Grossmont High School Educational Foundation started fundraising for the new Ryan Wilcox Scholarship Friday. The scholarship looks to raise $19,000 every year for a deserving college-bound senior in honor of the Grossmont student who died last year from a rare form of Leukemia.
Wilcox galvanized his school in 2016 after his illness forced him to stay home. Students held rallies with the hashtag “RyanStrong”.
“I definitely think more people have been aware of positivity,” said Ryan’s sister Bailey, who is now a sophomore at the high school.
The foundation chose $19,000 and chose Friday to make the announcement because it would have been Ryan’s 19th birthday.
The scholarship will be awarded to a student who embodies Ryan’s spirit and also overcame some challenge.
“It means so much just to know that his tradition will carry on through high school,” said Bailey.
The foundation set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for the scholarship.
