(KGTV)--Astronomy enthusiasts who want to experience the Great American Eclipse on August 21 have a chance to win a ticket aboard a charter plane to chase the celestial event from 35,000 feet above Earth.

Alaska Airlines is holding a social media contest to find the ultimate Space Geek to board an invitation-only flight departing Portland, making the lucky winner and his/her guest among the first of millions to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The last coast-to-coast total solar eclipse happened in 1918.

The Great American Eclipse will begin above the Pacific Ocean andtravel eastward toward Portland and eventually South Carolina.

"As an airline, we are in a unique position to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for astronomy enthusiasts," said the airline's vice president of marketing Sangita Woerner. "Flying high above the Pacific Ocean will not only provide one of the first views, but also one of the best."

To enter the contest, you must submit your e-mail address and upload a 30-second-or-less video explaining how much of a Space Geek you are. The deadline to enter is August 7.

The winner and a guest get airfare to Portland, two-night hotel accommodations, airfare for the special charter flight to chase the eclipse and a $500 Visa gift card for travel expenses.
