SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police detective fought back tears as he stood next to the woman who saved his life on Memorial Day this year.

The woman, Diane Craig, is a registered nurse from Poway. She was one of dozens honored during the 7th annual Hero Awards in Rancho Bernardo.

Craig was driving with her daughter on Memorial Day when she saw the off-duty detective face down on the side of the street. When she stopped to help, she noticed that he had gone into cardiac arrest, she immediately started CPR.

Detective Phillip Worthington survived and when he woke up in the hospital, the first thing he wanted to do was find out who had saved him.

He put up signs in his neighborhood, asking the community to help him find his hero. Weeks later, Craig called and told the detective she was the one that stopped to help.

Worthington credits Craig with saving his life. He's hoping to return to work in the next few weeks.
