CARLSBAD -- A 5-year-old girl almost drowned in a pool at a Carlsbad hotel, but was pulled to safety by a family friend and revived by a pair of employees, authorities said.

The girl was not breathing and did not have a pulse at about 5:15 p.m. Thursday, when the family friend brought her up from the bottom of the pool at the Cape Rey Carlsbad hotel on Ponto Road near Carlsbad Boulevard.

Moments later, two employees began CPR on the unresponsive girl and someone called 911, according to Carlsbad police.

The girl eventually regained consciousness. Arriving police and paramedics found her semi-conscious and crying, police said.

She was taken in an unknown condition to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, according to police.
