SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A failed utility pipe sent natural gas wafting through a Del Cerro neighborhood Friday, forcing occupants of more than a dozen homes to evacuate while repair crews worked to get the problem under control.

The failed underground 2-inch-diameter distribution line in the 6000 block of Camino Largo began sending the flammable vapors spewing out of the ground about 5:45 a.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

Authorities cleared people out of 14 homes while repair personnel worked to halt the leak, SDG&E spokesman Joe Britton said.

No injuries were reported.

Crews had the problem largely under control by late morning, with only a minimal amount of gas still escaping from the broken pipeline.

The cause of the mishap was under investigation. Crews were investigating whether the rupture might have been related to a power outage in the same general area, according to SDG&E.
