SAN DIEGO – A clerk’s quick thinking kept a small fire that broke out feet from a gas station in Barrio Logan early Friday morning from turning into something worse.

The blaze sparked before 3 a.m. next to some propane tanks near the Shell gas station at 1145 S. 28th St.

The clerk told 10News that a customer alerted him to the fire, so he sprang into action.

“A customer came in and told us, ‘hey, something's burning out there by the propane.’ So I grabbed the fire extinguisher and went out there, and they didn't work, so my friend grabbed the waters.’

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded and completely extinguished the blaze. It did not spread to any buildings. The fire appeared to have been set with pieces of wood and palm fronds.

MAST is investigating the cause.

This comes after a series of fire sprees this week. There were multiple fires set in North Park and Hillcrest on Monday. On Thursday morning, a woman was arrested in connection with a series of fires in the Midway District.
