SAN DIEGO – A blaze that broke out in the basement dumpster of an East Village residential facility in downtown San Diego forced staff and residents to evacuate early Thursday morning.
The blaze broke out before 4:47 a.m. at the Peachtree Inn, located at 901 F St. A fire somehow sparked in a dumpster in the basement and sent smoke wafting through all four floors of the building via the trash chute.
Everyone in the building was safely evacuated. Three people had to be treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews quickly extinguished the blaze. However, firefighters worked for up to an hour to clear the building of smoke. Residents were allowed back in around 5:50 a.m.
The Peachtree Inn is a month-to-month facility that primarily houses veterans and those with disabilities.
SDFR arson investigators were investigating the cause.
