SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A deadly hit-and-run mystery continues to deepen.

"A lot of emotions. Anger, hurt, tore up," said Tanya Darby, choking back tears.

Darby's 20-year-old brother Joseph was found dead in the fast lane of westbound Highway 94 - just east of the 30th street exit at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.

The driver who hit him had taken off. Parts from a newer model gray Volkswagon were scattered nearby. The search for the driver is part of a growing mystery.

"Things just don't add up," said Darby. "Joseph was in an area he doesn't frequent."

Tanya says her brother had called a friend asking for a ride home to Lakeside from Santee. His friend told him he could if Joseph got a little closer to Lakeside.

Joseph's body was found about two hours later.

Nearby was an older Honda, its door open with a fluid trail leading up the car. California Highway Patrol officers say the fluid trail is connected to the case but declined to say how.
