SAN DIEGO -- The son of fallen San Diego police officer Jonathan DeGuzman was crowned homecoming king Friday night at Otay Ranch High School.

Chief Shelly Zimmerman tweeted a photo of Jed, congratulating him. He's pictured with his mom Jane.
Officer DeGuzman was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 28 in the Southcrest neighborhood. On Thursday, his name was added to Chula Vista's police memorial.

DeGuzman, 43, was shot along with a fellow officer in a gun battle that erupted during a field stop on Acacia Grove Way. DeGuzman was shot five times at close range and later died at Scripps Mercy Hospital. He was survived by a wife and two children.

His partner, Officer Wade Irwin, 32, underwent surgery for a bullet wound at UCSD Medical Center and survived. He continues to recover.

The ex-con who allegedly opened fire on them, 52-year-old Jesse Michael Gomez, was critically wounded in the shootout. Gomez was arraigned at UCSD Medical Center on charges of murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He is being held in the San Diego Central Jail on $5 million bail.
