ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A judge has dismissed a civil rights lawsuit filed against the San Diego County city of Escondido by the parents of a man fatally shot by police in 2013.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reportsthe ruling last week by U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant found that the officers' use of force against Pedro Campos was reasonable. In its motion to dismiss the case, the city argued that Campos' death amounted to "suicide by cop."
The suit alleged that officers Marcos Fuentes and Patrick Hand used excessive force when they shot the 29-year-old after he threatened them with a knife and refused to drop the weapon.
The newspaper says Campos was depressed by a breakup and had a suicide note in his pocket.
An attorney for Campos' parents called the judge's decision disappointing.
