SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Employers across San Diego County will open their doors Friday in what could lead to new careers for locals.

About 50 San Diego companies, from Illumina to Action Drone to Chuao Chocolatier, will provide tours to the public in celebration of the annual Manufacturing Day. The idea is to educate locals about what these manufacturers do, which for some, could inspire a career change.

"There's perhaps bit of a misconception that every manufacturing job is an assembly line role, but really a variety of jobs exist," said Eduardo Velasquez, research manager at the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation.

Velasquez noted that more than 100,000 San Diegans work in the field, which pays a premium. The average salary is $69,000, according to a study by the EDC.

White Labs, a yeast and fermentation company that also brews craft beer, will also be offering tours. It's hiring for an entry-level position in the brewery.

"Get your boots on the ground, your foot in the door, learn a lot and be able to venture out and learn prospect," said Joe Kurowski, White Labs' brewing manager.

Most of the tours on Manufacturing Day are free, but it's important to register ahead of time. You can search for different tours throughout the day on its website.
