SAN DIEGO - An Imperial Beach man with four prior DUIs is in custody on suspicion of being drunk when he got into a traffic accident that killed a pedestrian near Otay Valley Regional Park over the weekend.

Nicholas Ruben Ramirez, 28, had just left a bar in the 1400 block of Third Avenue in Chula Vista when he crashed his car into a parked vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

Ramirez drove off but returned a few minutes later, Lt. Eric Thunberg said. When witnesses to the non-injury accident confronted him, however, he allegedly sped off again.

He allegedly then lost control of his car, which hopped a nearby curb and struck a man sitting on a bench at a bus stop, severing one of his legs. The victim, who remains unidentified, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Ramirez, an information technology worker, was arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of murder, vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and hit-and-run. He was being held at San Diego Central Jail without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
