IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. -- A drunken driver struck two bar patrons standing on a sidewalk in Imperial Beach Friday night, the San Diego Sheriff's Department reports.
The crash occurred at 9:15 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of Palm Avenue near 10th Street.
A 36-year-old Imperial Beach resident was driving a 2007 Ford Sport Trac Explorer XLT west on Palm Avenue, according to Sgt. Leonel Gurrola of the sheriff's Imperial Beach station.
As the vehicle approached 10th Street, it continued westbound and drove onto a sidewalk, striking two patrons standing outside of the Salty Frog Bar at 992 Palm Ave., Gurrola said.
The driver failed to stop and continued westbound on the sidewalk before coming to rest along the north curb of Palm Avenue and Emory Street due to severe damage to the front end suspension of the vehicle, Gurrola said.
The two pedestrians were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, which did not appear to be life-threatening, according to Gurrola.
The driver was later detained and arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, Gurrola said.
The crash remains under investigation.
