POWAY, Calif. -- Deputies say a 20-year-old man fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his pickup truck into a fire hydrant in Poway, creating a geyser that flooded a home overnight Monday.
The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 16800 block of Espola Road. According to a San Diego County Sheriff’s sergeant, a driver was headed home when he dozed off and his pickup began to drift. His truck then went over a curb and knocked off a hydrant.
The subsequent geyser sent water cascading into the backyards of two homes in the 12000 block of Pinefield Road. The flooding caused a small landslide in one of the backyards, ultimately flooding the living room and kitchen of the home. The kitchen had just been remodeled six months prior, the homeowner said.
"Just watching the water rise up and trying to prevent it from coming in the house, but it came in anyway," he told 10News.
The garage of the second home was also flooded.
Poway Fire Department crews arrived and shut off the water within about 30 minutes.
The driver was not hurt. It was not immediately clear if he would face any charges.
A financial estimate of the damage to the two properties was not confirmed.
