SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police sought Thursday a hit-and-run driver who abandoned a car in the Tierrasanta neighborhood and ran off after striking two motorcyclists, fatally injuring one.

A white Pontiac Grand Am rear-ended the two riders as they were stopped on westbound Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Interstate 15 around 11:40 p.m. Thursday, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. The driver left the car and fled on foot.

One of the motorcyclists, a 43-year-old man, was taken to a hospital following the crash, but later died from his injuries, Heims said. The second rider sustained minor injuries that did not require hospitalization, according to the officer.

A suspect description was not immediately available.
