SAN DIEGO – A suspected drunk driver careened through a construction site in La Jolla early Thursday morning and smashed into a Caltrans truck that had a worker inside before trying to run away.
The crash occurred at about 1 a.m. on the onramp from La Jolla Parkway to Interstate 5 southbound.
A California Highway Patrol officer at the scene told 10News the driver was speeding down La Jolla Parkway. He drove through the orange cones and flares that were blocking off the Caltrans construction site and rear-ended a Caltrans pickup truck which had an employee inside. The driver then skidded down the onramp before finally coming to a stop.
As CHP officers arrived on scene, the suspect reportedly jumped out of his car and tried to run down an embankment onto I-5. However, he was chased down and captured before he could get on the freeway.
The driver of the Caltrans truck was not seriously hurt, CHP said. Paramedics treated both the Caltrans employee and the suspect at the scene, but neither required transport to a hospital.
The driver, who was not identified, will be booked on drunken driving charges.
