SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A gas leak in Sherman Heights caused by a hit-and-run driver forced dozens of residents to flee from their homes early Tuesday morning.

According to San Diego police, at around 3 a.m., a vehicle struck a gas line in an alley off the 2500 block of Imperial Avenue and then drove away.

Due to the location of the severed line, about 70 people in several nearby homes had to evacuate. Many of the evacuees took refuge inside a nearby police station.

Just before 6 a.m., those evacuated were allowed to return to their home as crews continued to repair the broken line.

10News learned the line was expected to be fixed by 8 a.m. at the soonest.

Information on the vehicle that hit the gas line was not immediately available.

No injuries were reported.
