EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people escaped an early morning house fire in El Cajon thanks to one of their dogs.

The fire broke out at a home in the 300 block of Minnesota Ave. at about 3 a.m., according to authorities.

A woman told 10News she was sleeping with her small dog when her bigger dog woke her up. The woman said she woke up to the house filled with smoke from the fire in a back room, so she ran for her husband and both escaped with the big dog.

However, the couple apparently left the small dog inside the house. Firefighters were able to knock the fire down and rescued the little dog.

The couple and the dogs were not injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
