SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 3,500 pedal pushers took part Sunday morning in the ninth annual Bike the Bay, a 25-mile ride along the completed sections of the Bayshore Bikeway.
The route began in downtown San Diego, crossed the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, wound down to Imperial Beach, and turned back up through Chula Vista and National City.
"Folks come from around the country to Bike the Bay and experience San Diego's magnificence on two wheels,'' said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the San Diego County Bike Coalition. "Each year, the ride gets increasingly popular, and we continue to see more families and children coming along for the quintessential summer ride.''

Bike the Bay, which will benefit the coalition, was launched in two waves -- one at 7 a.m. and one at 8 a.m. Refreshments and bike repair stations were set up along the course, which is relatively flat after the bridge
portion.
A post-ride festival was scheduled with entertainment, food trucks and a beer garden.
