SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A construction crew accidentally ruptured a natural gas line while working in Rancho Penasquitos this afternoon, prompting the evacuation of 10 nearby homes while utility crews worked to patch the pipe.
The non-injury accident in the 8900 block of Newmont Drive occurred about 1 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
In addition to clearing residents out of nearby homes, firefighters directed others farther removed from the source of the flammable fumes to shelter in their houses until the broken line could be shut off, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.
San Diego Gas & Electric personnel were called in to make repairs.
