A former Compton Unified School District trustee who sexually assaulted a 25-year-old college student as the victim slept in their shared downtown San Diego hotel room was sentenced Thursday to six years in state prison.

Skyy De'Anthony Fisher, 33, will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Superior Court Judge Runston Maino sentenced the defendant, who was convicted in January of oral copulation on an unconscious person, after denying a motion for a new trial based on ineffective assistance of counsel claims.

Maino said Fisher committed a violation of trust when he sexually assaulted the victim, identified in court as Steven. The defendant lied when the victim asked about his sexual preference, the judge said.

A letter penned by the victim to the defendant says the April 5, 2014, incident has taken a toll on his life.

"You were supposed to be my friend," he wrote.

Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox said the victim was driven to the brink of suicide.

"This was someone he respected," the prosecutor said. "The defendant took advantage of him."

During the trial, Fox said Steven drove down to San Diego with the defendant during spring break in 2014. The victim was asleep in his own bed when he felt a "weird sensation" and awoke to find the defendant committing a sex act on him, the prosecutor said.

After the sexual encounter, Steven went downstairs and got in his car and Fisher followed, but Steven ordered him to get out, then drove off, called 911 and went for a sexual assault exam after talking to police.

He later made a pretext call to Fisher, during which the defendant apologized for what happened, Fox said.

Steven testified that he met Fisher on Facebook and developed a friendship with the defendant because he was interested in working for the school district.

During spring break 2014, Steven said he told Fisher that he wanted to get away and the defendant volunteered to go with him to San Diego because he knew the area.

Steven testified that he and Fisher met up with two of the defendant's friends in the Gaslamp District and went to a couple of bars, where they danced with women.

As the evening concluded, Steven said he stopped at a convenience store to buy some condoms because he anticipated calling a prostitute for sex.

About 4 a.m., Steven said he was having sex with a female prostitute when Fisher got up out of bed, but Steven said he pushed him away.

Once the prostitute left the hotel room, Steven said he smoked some marijuana and fell asleep. Sometime later, he said he awoke to Fisher committing a sex act on him.
